Overview of Services

BGS oversees the training of approximately 1,200 PhD students in the biomedical sciences at the University of Pennsylvania.  BGS consists of 7 graduate groups, some of which have distinct specialty programs.  Each graduate group has its own training mission, leadership, and staff, but there is often significant overlap among the groups in respect to faculty membership, courses offered, training activities, policies and procedures.  The BGS Office provides centralized support to the graduate groups for student recruitment and admissions, student fellowships, curricular oversight, career and professional development, records management, and publicity.  BGS is based in the Perelman School of Medicine but its 750 faculty members represent seven Penn schools and several associated institutes.
